Preparing for UPPER GI ENDOSCOPY
(EGD / Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)

  1. You should have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the procedure.

  2. You must have someone to drive you home after the procedure is done. The medication you will receive will cause you to feel drowsy and unable to drive yourself home. For your own protection, you should not take a TAXI unaccompanied after receiving sedation for a medical procedure.

  3. Patients taking any blood thinning medications such as: COUMADIN, PLAVIX, PLETAL, TICLID, please notify Dr. Alar's office. You will be instructed if and when you need to stop taking these medications prior to your procedure. IF YOU TAKE AN ASPIRIN OR OTHER NSAID (MOTRIN, ALEVE) EVERY DAY, STOP THEM 4 DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR TEST.

  4. If you take heart or blood pressure medication in the morning, you should take them with a small sip of water on the day of the procedure.

  5. If you have any questions about the procedure or the above instructions, please call us at 407-345-7990.

After the procedure, the physician will instruct you if you need to make a follow-up appointment with our office.

Please be advised that if biopsies were taken during your procedure, results may take up to 7 days.
